Bringing a newborn into your home is a momentous occasion filled with joy, tenderness, and the pitter-patter of tiny feet. And when it comes to preserving these early days, knowing how to prepare for your home newborn photo session can make the experience more relaxed, natural, and truly meaningful.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through everything from setting the scene to choosing outfits and calming baby — so your in-home session feels as beautiful and effortless as the moments we’ll capture.

Your home is more than a backdrop — it’s where your story begins. When we photograph you in your own space, the images naturally feel more intimate and real.
Here’s how to make it feel photo-ready (without the stress):
✅ Choosing the Best Light-Filled Room
North- or east-facing windows often give the softest glow. I’ll help find the best spot when I arrive, so don’t worry if your home doesn’t have huge windows.
✅ Tidy, but don’t overthink it
Declutter side tables and baby items, but don’t feel pressured to make your space look perfect. A few cozy blankets or textured throws go a long way.
✅ Crank up the heat
Babies love being warm — we keep the room around 75–80°F to help them feel secure and sleepy during the session.

Keep it comfortable, neutral, and true to you.
✔️ Soft, neutral tones (beige, oatmeal, cream, dusty blues, warm greys) look timeless and keep the focus on baby
✔️ Avoid bold patterns or large logos
✔️ Choose breathable, layered fabrics for parents and siblings — linen, knits, cotton
✔️ Swaddle baby in a soft, solid wrap (I recommend having 2–3 swaddles on hand)
✔️ Bare feet or cozy socks make the whole session feel even more relaxed and lived-in
📍 Pro Tip: If you’re breastfeeding, wear something that allows easy access but still feels like you.

I typically aim to schedule newborn sessions between 7–14 days after birth — when baby is still curled, sleepy, and new – But I am also very flexible on this timing.
💡 Mornings are usually best for natural light and calmer energy.
📅 On the day of your shoot:

Here’s a quick checklist of essentials that help things flow smoothly:

While I’ll guide you with gentle prompts, some of the most treasured photos are the unplanned ones.
These real-life moments bring your gallery to life — no stiff posing, no pressure to “perform.”

Big siblings and furry friends are part of your growing story, and they absolutely belong in these memories.
🐶 For pets: Have treats nearby and let them explore. We’ll work with them gently.
👧 For toddlers: Keep a favorite toy nearby and involve them early, when they’re freshest and most engaged.
Let them be themselves — it brings a natural joy to your session.
Once your images are edited and delivered, you can preserve these memories in thoughtful ways:

These moments are fleeting, but they don’t have to fade.
Your in-home newborn session isn’t about perfect poses or pristine rooms. It’s about showing up as you are — tired, glowing, in love, in awe — and letting those first days unfold honestly.
You’ve already done the hard work by bringing this beautiful little human into the world. Let me take it from here — with care, warmth, and a lens that sees you.
What is the best age for a newborn photo session?
The ideal time for an in-home newborn session is between 7–14 days old. Babies are typically sleepier and more curled at this stage, making posing easier.
What if my baby is fussy or won’t sleep?
Totally okay! I allow plenty of time for breaks — feeding, rocking, soothing — it’s all part of the experience.
What should my baby wear during a photo session at home?
Stick to neutral onesies or simple swaddles. I bring soft wraps and styling elements to enhance the scene without overwhelming it.
What if my home doesn’t feel photo-worthy?
You’d be surprised what a soft window and good light can do. We focus on emotion, not perfection.
Do I need to clean my entire house before the session?
Not at all! I typically photograph in just 1–2 rooms with the best light. A simple declutter and cozy touches (like throw blankets) are perfect.
How warm should the room be for a newborn photo session?
We recommend keeping the space at 75–80°F to help baby stay calm, sleepy, and comfortable throughout the session.
Do I need to bring props or baskets?
Not at all. I work with minimal, timeless styling — swaddles, textures, and emotion are enough.
Can grandparents join?
Absolutely, especially if they’re visiting and want to be part of the moment.
Can I include siblings or pets in the session?
Absolutely! Siblings and pets help tell the full story of your growing family. I’ll guide those interactions naturally and safely.

Let’s preserve these fleeting, beautiful days with calm, cozy imagery that reflects your family’s love.

Hi — I’m Shannon O’Malley.
I’m a Minneapolis-based (soon-to-be Dallas, TX) photographer specializing in online dating profile photography, personal branding portraits, business headshots, and senior sessions. I work with people who want photos that feel natural, confident, and genuinely reflective of who they are — not stiff, overproduced, or performative.
My approach is rooted in natural light, ease, and emotional intelligence. I believe the best photos happen when people feel comfortable enough to be themselves — and seen enough to trust the process. Whether someone is stepping back into dating, refining their professional presence, or marking a meaningful season of life, my goal is always the same: to create images that feel honest and quietly powerful.
With over 15 years of experience behind the camera — and a journey that includes single motherhood, entrepreneurship, and a national CBS feature — I’ve seen firsthand how much impact the right photos can have. A strong image isn’t about vanity. It’s about clarity. It’s often the first impression that shapes how others perceive you — before you ever get the chance to explain yourself.
This blog is where I share insights on photography, visibility, confidence, and showing up with intention — both on and off camera.
When I’m not photographing clients, you’ll usually find me with my husband, my son, and our beautifully blended family — soaking up everyday life here in the Twin Cities (for now). We’ll be relocating to Dallas, Texas in 2026, where I’ll continue offering my signature photography experience for daters, creatives, and business owners throughout the DFW area.
If you’re here because you want photos that actually feel like you, you’re in the right place. I’m glad you found your way here.
