Self-Portrait Photography Tips I wish someone gave me

Are you ready to embark on a journey of self-discovery through self-portraiture? In this blog, we’ll explore 3 self-portrait photography tips I wish someone gave me when I first started on my journey. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned photographer, diving into the world of self-portraits can be both exhilarating and challenging. But with the right guidance and mindset, you can capture stunning self-portraits that reflect your true essence. Let’s explore three key tips to help you elevate your self-portrait game while infusing your journey with creativity and personal growth.

Self-Portrait Photography Tip #1 – Strategic Camera Placement: Maximizing Natural Light for Flawless Portraits

One of the first steps in capturing captivating self-portraits is mastering strategic camera placement. Begin by identifying a well-lit area in your home, such as a window or a doorway. Natural light can work wonders for your portraits, providing soft and flattering illumination. Experiment with different times of day to find the optimal lighting conditions for your self-portraits. Consider the mood you want to convey and adjust your positioning accordingly. Remember, the goal is to highlight your features while creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Tip #2 – Embrace Imperfection: Unleashing Creativity and Authenticity

In the world of self-portraiture, imperfection is not only accepted but celebrated. Embrace the beauty of imperfection and let your creativity run wild! Experiment with unconventional angles, unique lenses, and creative editing techniques to add depth and character to your portraits. Don’t be afraid to push the boundaries and try new things. The most captivating self-portraits often emerge from moments of spontaneity and experimentation. Trust your instincts and allow your true self to shine through in your images.

  • Purposefully take the image slightly out of focus
  • Add nude nylons over your lens
  • Use a sandwich baggy around your lens
  • Smear vaseline on part of your lens
  • Invest in a Lensbaby
  • Add overlays in post production – try adding fog, rain drops, or various textures
  • Overexpose highlights on purpose

Self-Portrait Photography Tip #3 – Patience in Pose Exploration: Discovering Your Unique Style

Capturing the perfect self-portrait requires patience and exploration. Take the time to experiment with different poses, expressions, and compositions to discover what feels most authentic to you. Start by browsing through inspiration boards on Pinterest or even Google and studying the work of other photographers. Pay attention to body language, facial expressions, and the overall mood of the images. Use these insights as a springboard for your own creative exploration. Remember, there are no right or wrong poses – only opportunities to express yourself in new and exciting ways.

In this behind the scenes video, I used a remote I purchased off Amazon for my Nikon D750 to trigger the shutter release. The lens I used with this self-portrait was my manual focus Lensbaby Composer Pro II with Sweet 35 optic. With each click of the camera, I explored different poses, expressions, and lighting setups, allowing my true essence to shine through in every frame. After 10 minutes of playing and experimenting, I landed one great shot I was proud of.

And here’s a pro tip: for precise focusing with a manual lens, use nearby objects as reference points before capturing your self-portrait. For this particular self-portrait, I used a plant that was to my left as a focal point. I’ve also been known to use stuffed animals or pillows or even my hand out in front of the lens if I planned to be more close. With a dash of creativity and a sprinkle of patience, you’ll unlock your full potential as a self-portrait photographer.
