Most people land here because their dating profile isn’t getting the response they expect — even though it looks “fine” on the surface.

Embracing imperfection in self-portrait photography isn’t just about accepting flaws—it’s about discovering emotional depth, unlocking authentic self-expression, and finding beauty where you least expect it. This creative approach allows photographers to shift focus away from perfectionism and toward honest storytelling. Through my own journey—including a vulnerable and exhilarating live demo at the Elena S Blair Mastermind Retreat—I’ve experienced firsthand how self-portrait photography can be both healing and transformative.
This truth hit home for me at the Elena S Blair Mastermind Retreat in Brooklyn, NY—my very first speaking engagement. Standing in front of an audience of 78 people, I was shaking. That morning, I cried in the shower, overwhelmed with nerves.
But as I began sharing my story and demonstrating a live self portrait photography session with my Lensbaby Velvet 56, something shifted. I spoke about the healing and expressive nature of self portraits. And as I created images in real time—flaws, stumbles, and all—I felt not judged, but liberated.
That one moment of courage has sparked something new: a deeper desire to teach and empower others through this incredible creative practice.

Thanks to the generous sponsorships from Miller’s Lab and Lensbaby, I demonstrated a unique technique: photographing through bubble wrap.
This isn’t just a quirky trick—it’s a metaphor for self portrait photography. The distortions soften and obscure, revealing mood and mystery. And like our own insecurities, the flaws enhance the final story.
This method, while visually stunning, also opens a doorway to self expression—inviting us to experiment, to play, and to let go of the need to be perfect.
Let’s be honest: turning the camera on yourself can feel uncomfortable at first.
That’s why I created the Camera Confidence Toolkit—to help you feel grounded, centered, and expressive in front of the lens. The Camera Confidence Toolkit is a great starting point for anyone exploring how embracing imperfection in self-portrait photography can actually enhance emotional connection in your work.
This kit isn’t just about poses. It’s about mindset shifts. Affirmations. Energy. It’s how I prepared for my own self-portrait sessions before ever stepping on that retreat stage.
If you’ve been hesitant to try self portrait photography because of fear or nerves, start here.
As photographers, embracing imperfection allows us to explore creativity without boundaries, see beauty in the unusual, and tell authentic stories. This approach encourages us to use unique materials and techniques to enhance our photography. Have you ever used unconventional tools in your work? Incorporating objects like prisms, fairy lights, or even household items can add unexpected elements to your photos. For example, shooting through a glass of water can create intriguing distortions, and using a simple piece of colored plastic can tint your images in magical ways.
By experimenting with different tools and techniques, we break free from traditional constraints and discover new facets of our creativity. Share your most inventive shots with me or let me know if this inspires you to experiment! Embrace the unexpected, and let’s see where it takes us.
Whether you’re shooting clients or exploring self portrait photography, try using unconventional materials to spark creativity. These imperfections tell compelling, authentic stories.
If you’re looking to try something new, embracing imperfection in self-portrait photography gives you permission to experiment with textures, blur, and abstract tools like bubble wrap or glass.
Use Creative Materials

Play with Shadows
Window blinds, houseplants, and lace curtains can all create stunning overlays of light and shadow.

Allow parts of your photo to blur and breathe. This draws focus and adds emotion.

Consistency builds confidence. That’s why I created the 30-Day Self-Portrait Challenge. This resource offers one prompt per day to help you explore light, emotion, movement, and color—all through self portrait photography.
It’s great for beginners or those stuck in a creative rut.
Stuck in front of the camera wondering what to do with your hands (or your face)? I’ve been there.
The Self-Portrait Posing Guide was created to take away that stress. Inside, you’ll find pose sequences, expression tips, and framing suggestions that make every session easier and more creative.
This guide is designed to empower your self expression—not restrict it.
At the retreat, I realized that the most powerful photos are not always the ones that are sharpest or most technically perfect—they’re the ones that feel the most honest.
Through self portrait photography, we’re allowed to speak. To emote. To create a visual diary of our highs, lows, and everything in between.
This art form is deeply personal. Yet when shared, it becomes universal.
Curious how this art form can support personal growth? Dive into how self-portraiture leads to personal transformation.
Stepping onto that stage reminded me of something I want you to remember too:
You don’t need to be perfect to be powerful.
If you’re nervous about trying self portrait photography, or unsure where to begin—start with self compassion. Try a new lens. Shoot through bubble wrap. Let yourself be blurry. Be playful. Be poetic.
Above all, be you.

I am a photographer and dating strategist specializing in natural-light portraits that feel confident, approachable, and genuinely reflective of who you are. Whether I’m shooting a Dating Photos That Work™ session or a high-level personal branding project, my goal is to create images that are honest, not performative.
Rooted in emotional intelligence and over 16 years of experience, my process is designed for the “unphotogenic.” I believe the best photos happen when you feel comfortable enough to be yourself and seen enough to trust the process. A strong image isn’t about vanity—it’s about clarity. It is the first impression that shapes how the world perceives you before you ever say a word.
My journey includes a decade of single motherhood, entrepreneurship, and a national CBS News feature on the psychology of first impressions. But perhaps my favorite “proof of concept” is my own: I met my husband on Bumble at age 42. I’ve seen firsthand how a strategic, authentic online presence can transform your life and lead to real, aligned connection.
End of April 2026, my family and I officially relocated to Dallas, Texas. While I am now locally serving the DFW Metroplex, the Twin Cities will always be a part of my story. I continue to offer my signature photography experience in Minneapolis–St. Paul through exclusive quarterly residency sessions.
When I’m not behind the lens, you’ll find me with my husband, my son, and our beautifully blended family, soaking up our new Texas life (and probably hunting for the best patio in Dallas).
If you’re here because you’re ready for photos that actually feel like you, you’re in the right place. I’m so glad you found your way here.
