A strong dating profile for men is not simply a collection of six decent photos and a few prompts filled in five minutes before bed.
And the way all of those pieces work together shapes the first impression someone receives before a conversation ever begins.
If you’re looking for dating profile advice for men, Blaine’s perspective is especially useful because her work focuses heavily on helping men navigate dating more intentionally.
That overlap is one reason I wanted to talk with Blaine Anderson, founder of Dating by Blaine.
Blaine works with men on the parts of dating that extend well beyond photography — including dating coaching, communication, profiles, and matchmaking. Her current business describes her as a professional matchmaker + dating coach who has worked with thousands of men since launching Dating by Blaine in 2020.
My professional lane is narrower.
I’m a dating profile photographer + profile strategist. I work with visual first impressions, photo strategy, image selection and order, and the way a set of photos represents someone’s personality and life.
So throughout this conversation, Blaine owns the dating advice.
I’ll stay focused on what her answers mean for the part of the profile I actually work with.
Two Different Professional Lanes
Blaine works with men on dating, communication, profiles + relationships.
I focus on the visual introduction — what your photos communicate before the conversation begins.

I started by asking Blaine what she wishes more people understood about modern dating.
Blaine Anderson · Expert Response
“The biggest thing I wish more singles understood about modern dating is that you’re 100% responsible for your dating life. Not Hinge, not the cute guy/girl you met last night who you hope is the one, not even your dating coach or matchmaker if you’ve hired one. You must have agency. You must be proactive. Online dating is widely misunderstood in particular. You can’t expect to find your person by swiping for 10 minutes in your Uber home from work, then calling it a day.”
Blaine’s answer is about agency: her view that dating works better when someone actively participates in the process rather than expecting an app, coach, matchmaker, or single interaction to do the work for them.
That is her coaching perspective, so I’ll leave the broader dating recommendation with her.
Where it intersects with my work is much more specific.
A dating profile is one of the few parts of online dating that you can intentionally shape before someone ever encounters it.
You cannot control how another person responds.
You can make sure the profile they encounter is current, understandable, and genuinely representative of you.
From the Profile Side
You cannot control someone else’s reaction to your profile.
You can control how clearly you represent yourself.
Next, I asked Blaine about a mistake she sees men make online.
Blaine Anderson · Expert Response
“The biggest mistake men make dating online is failing to invest enough effort into crafting a quality profile. The bar is lower than most guys realize, but uploading 6x photos from your camera roll at random, and winging your bio / prompts, is a recipe for loneliness and frustration. Marketing yourself successfully requires thoughtful, deliberate work. Most guys are capable of crafting an attractive profile, but it requires effort and know-how. You should invest in professional photos for example! But even professional photos are just one piece of the larger puzzle that is online dating today.”
This is the point in our conversation where our professional lanes overlap most clearly.
I agree with the part Blaine emphasizes about photographs: professional photos alone are not the whole profile.
From the photography side, dating profile advice for men needs to go beyond simply telling someone to “get better photos.”
A technically beautiful portrait does not automatically make a strong dating image.
And six individually flattering photos do not automatically create a strong lineup.
The complete set needs to give someone useful information.
That means thinking about things like:
That is why I think in terms of a photo strategy, not simply taking better headshots.
Professional Photos Are One Piece
A Strong Dating Profile Needs Range
Recognizable
Your photos should look like the person someone would actually meet.
Varied
Different expressions, settings, framing, and activities give someone more information.
Specific
Your environments and activities can offer real clues about how you spend your time.
Cohesive
The images should work as one introduction rather than six unrelated photographs.
One person can communicate very different pieces of his life without becoming a different person in each photograph.

Neither photograph needs to prove that Brandon is interesting.
Their job is simply to give someone more useful visual information about him.
One part of Blaine’s coaching work involves challenging assumptions her male clients bring into dating.
Blaine Anderson · Expert Response
“The aspect of my coaching work that I enjoy the most — and leads to the most ‘aha’ moments — is around dating psychology. Many of my coaching clients have misperceptions about what women want, and what it takes to attract a quality partner today. Some think it’s about money, or professional success, or looks. Sure those things matter in dating, but they don’t matter nearly as much as being authentic, showing up as your best self, and learning to really listen.”
That is Blaine’s professional perspective based on the men she coaches, and I think it is important to leave it attributed to her rather than turn it into a universal statement about what all women want.
The piece that intersects with photography is her emphasis on authenticity.
Authentic does not mean careless.
It does not mean grabbing whatever six photos happen to be sitting in your camera roll.
And it does not mean deliberately making your photos look amateur so they seem “real.”
For me, authenticity means that the polished version and the real-life version still feel like the same person.
Polished Does Not Have to Mean Performative
The goal isn’t to turn you into a different person for the profile.
It is to create photographs that feel intentional, current, and genuinely representative of the person someone will meet offline.

I also asked Blaine what kind of client she most enjoys helping.
Blaine Anderson · Expert Response
“This is a great question. I work with guys from many different backgrounds, as I’d imagine you do too. The clients I feel most passionate about helping are guys who have their personal and professional lives together, and are ready for dating to catch up. They know they should be experiencing better outcomes with women, but feel stuck diagnosing what’s wrong and solving the problem. These guys tend to get great results from my programs, and I love helping them, especially because women love meeting these guys once they’ve made a few small changes!”
Blaine’s current business continues to focus heavily on men, particularly through coaching and matchmaking. Dating by Blaine now offers both one-to-one services and self-directed programs, with profile work included in some of those offerings.
Her work and mine can overlap, but they solve different problems.
If someone needs help with dating behavior, communication, meeting women, matchmaking, or the broader dating experience, that is Blaine’s lane.
If the question is:
“Do the photos on my profile actually represent me well?”
that is mine.
Same Profile. Different Expertise.
Dating advice and photo strategy can both matter.
They are not the same service.
Blaine told me her website was the best place to reach her, with Instagram offering a sense of her content and communication style.
Since this interview was originally published, Dating by Blaine has expanded across both dating coaching and matchmaking for men. Blaine’s current website is the best source for her up-to-date programs, availability, and services.
Blaine Anderson · Expert Response
“My website is the best place to get in touch, and my Instagram is a great place to get a sense for my message and communication style.”
Professional dating photos are not a substitute for dating coaching.
And dating coaching does not automatically solve a weak visual first impression.
That is where my work begins.

One thing I appreciate about Blaine’s perspective in this interview is that she does not treat a dating profile as something men should throw together and hope for the best.
Effort matters.
But effort alone is not the same thing as clarity.
You can spend hours choosing photographs and still choose six images that tell essentially the same story.
You can hire a professional photographer and still end up with a gallery full of beautiful portraits that do not work particularly well together on a dating app.
For me, useful dating profile advice for men should help create a clearer introduction — not turn every profile into the same formula.
That is why I keep coming back to the pattern.
People do not experience your dating profile one piece at a time.
They experience the combination.
The goal of my work is to make that visual introduction clearer — not to predict what happens once two people begin talking.
The Bigger Picture
One good photo is useful.
A clear profile needs the pieces to work together.
A strong profile gives someone useful, current information about who you are rather than relying on one flattering photograph or a collection of unrelated images. Photo variety, lifestyle context, expression, image order, and the written portions of the profile all contribute to the overall first impression.
Not necessarily. Professional photography can be useful when your current photos are outdated, repetitive, low quality, or do not represent your life very well. But as Blaine points out in this interview, professional photos are only one part of the larger profile.
I generally look for a combination of a clear lead image, natural expression, lifestyle context, visual variety, and images that show different pieces of the same person. The exact mix should depend on the individual rather than a generic checklist.
No. My work centers on dating-profile photography, photo strategy, selection and order, and visual first impressions. Dating coaches such as Blaine work on broader aspects of dating, which may include communication, behavior, relationships, meeting people, and profile strategy. Blaine’s current business also offers matchmaking.
You may not need another photo session. Sometimes the issue is the combination of images, photo order, prompts, bio, or overall profile flow. A profile-level review can help identify which part needs attention first.
